The atelier model

Not a factory. An atelier.

FERNAA's textiles are produced within independent artisan ateliers in Sri Lanka. Working alongside a close-knit team of skilled craftspeople, every textile is individually designed, waxed, dyed and finished under artistic supervision.

This model preserves creative integrity while ensuring consistent quality, and it allows us to produce limited collections without compromising craftsmanship. Unlike industrial textile printing, no two FERNAA textiles are ever completely identical — every piece carries the subtle character of the hand that made it.

From wax to finished textile

01

Design

Master Atelier

Each collection begins with the master batik artisan, who creates original motifs exclusively for FERNAA. No two textile patterns are ever replicated, preserving true artisan integrity.

02

Waxing

Hand Craft

Skilled artisans apply hot wax by hand using traditional tjanting tools, carefully tracing each motif onto pure silk or cotton. This labor-intensive process defines our singular aesthetic.

03

Dyeing

Natural Dyes

Natural dyes are applied in controlled stages within the Sri Lankan atelier. Each textile absorbs color uniquely, ensuring no two finished pieces are ever identical in tone or depth.

04

Finishing

Quality Check

Wax is removed and each textile is hand-finished, inspected and prepared for garment construction. Only textiles meeting our exacting standards proceed to the cutting room.

Signature construction

The details you only notice inside the garment.

Where the textile is the art, the construction is the discipline. Every FERNAA garment is built to the standards of a couture atelier, including the finishes nobody sees.
